IMD’s Smart City Index is based on a people-centric definition of what it means (or should mean) to be smart in a world of limited physical resources and fast expanding human and technological capabilities. Looking at it from the point of view of citizens, the BBC has carried out a very interesting review of 5 of the top 10 cities of the IMD Smart City Index 2024: Canberra (3rd), Singapore (5th), Lausanne (7th), London (8th) and Abu Dhabi (10th). See BBC article here.
Feedback from entrepreneurs, city leaders and ordinary citizens are a precious input to any serious research work on the future of cities. Real people talking frankly about real issues. This is part of IMD’s approach. It is also reflected in the series of books and case studies that have accompanied the publication of the Smart City Index since its creation in 2019. The third volume (Prosperous and Inclusive Cities) just came out. It offers an original model of inclusive prosperity for the future, and brings up the experience of a wide range of cities around the world – all recipients of the Seoul Smart City Prize (which will take place again in Seoul next October) : Seoul, Abu Dhabi, Abuja, Dublin, George Town, Kaohsiung, Konya, Luxembourg, Madrid, Mexico City, Odense, and Wellington.
